words that come out of my daughter's mouth

Just for my records' sake.... :) :) And because it's so cute. Here is a list of the words my almost-17-month-old daughter is currently saying.

  • Mommy (my favorite!!)
  • Daddy
  • puppy (for any four-legged creature)
  • hot
  • Harry (the name of our cat who died in October -- she thinks all cats are named Harry, so she calls our other cat that as well :)
  • cracker (for any food)
  • uh-oh
  • baby/bebe (for little brother)
  • Papa
  • hi/bye
  • car
  • poopy (said while pointing at her diaper)
  • yucky (so cute, she always makes a face when she says it!)

ETA: ones I forgot..... :) :)

  • nana (banana)
  • kwirl (for squirrel)
  • guck (stuck)
  • bobby (not exactly sure what this is in reference to, but she says it a lot :)

you know you have a toddler when....

  • All your lower shelves are either empty or filled with toys that little people are allowed to touch.
  • You say "NO" approximately 6212 times daily.
  • You have learned to shove the candy in your mouth while offering the littler person a carrot. She then thinks she is eating the same thing as you!! :)
  • Your neatly lined up shoes by the front door are in a big pile in the dining room by noon.
  • The toilet seat in the hall bathroom has no less than 10 pacifiers sitting on it.
  • Your cats actually don't mind being swatted by you or even bathed because it is preferable to the torture induced by the little person.
  • Your coffee table currently resides in the middle of the office instead of in the family room because a little person has banged her mouth on it one too many times.
  • You have board books in your house and they are BENT.
  • Giggling turns to crying and then back to giggling in about 4.27 seconds flat.
  • You have run after the little person yelling "we do NOT eat dishwasher tablets!!"
  • You find yourself wondering HOW BORING your life must have been before little people entered it.

neglecting the blog...

Ahhh yes, it has come to that again. Three weeks or so between posts. I won't say I try really hard to keep it up. :) :) But I kinda try. I think about what I'd like to write a lot. Like a lot a lot, but it rarely gets beyond the thinking stage. And I hate typing one-handed, so by the time I get a kid set down/sleeping/whatever, there are more pressing things that I want to do with my two free hands -- like eat!! Or shower!! Or maybe even get dressed.

Life is busy, steady, crazy, fun. I generally think I have the two-kid thing down. Haha. :) :) So what have we been doing??

  • Callum is almost two months old now and starting to be much more aware of life. He loves to watch the mobile in Delaney's crib. He sleeps pretty well at night, but doesn't much care for sleeping in a bed, so most nights he is in his carseat. I am hoping to break him of that soon, because it's not a great long-term arrangement. But for now, we are both getting better sleep than when he wanted to sleep with me every night. He will generally sleep a 6-7 hour stretch, wake up and eat, and then back to sleep for 3-ish more hours. I can't complain!! Also, yesterday, for the first time, he was able to take a bottle of pumped milk, which makes my life so much easier. Obviously, we are still mainly nursing, but now I can leave him with Grandma or Daddy or whoever for a little while if necessary. Very handy. He has started smiling a little, but he is definitely a much more serious baby than Delaney was/is. We have to work hard for his smiles!!
  • Delaney is 14 months old this week and a little firecracker. The girl has attitude for sure. I hope and pray that we can direct and guide her spirited personality in the right direction. I'm sure God can use her in a great way!! She is a crazy kid. She got her top four teeth this month, so that has made for some crabby times, and she is, of course, a full-time walker. She climbs up anything she sees, loves to sing, loves to torture the cats, has perfected a fake laugh, cheeses for the camera, gets into all the stuff she shouldn't, loves just about everyone she meets, and is in general a very busy and happy toddler. We are so thankful for her and the joy she brings to us every day.
  • We were able to go to Belleville last week and help out with a new church that has been planted there. It's about a three-hour trip one way, so we got a hotel room and spent the night. With two kiddos, we weren't sure if that would be the best idea ever, but they impressed us by being very good travelers, and very good sleepers in the hotel. It was great to see our old pastor and his wife, and support the new ministry they have been called to. It is always a blessing when a new church gets started in Canada -- they need them so badly!! (P.S. The very good traveling is not always the case. One or both of them have been known to scream/screech loudly on much shorter trips....)
  • James is on vacation, and then parental leave, starting September 26. He doesn't have to go back to work then until February 2012. Gotta love that little benefit of living in Canada. Of course, I am still on extended maternity leave -- the hospital is holding my job for me, but I'm about 99.5% sure I won't be going back. We have already started a list of things we need to buy and get done while James is on leave. Now if we just had unlimited funds.... ;)
  • I'm having a baby shower tonight!! The ladies from our church are throwing it, and I am sure Callum will be blessed with lots of wonderful things. We are so thankful for our church family!! They really pitched in when Callum was born. Many offered to come help me out (c-sections are NOT fun!!), many brought meals and gifts, and all were a great encouragement to us.
  • Speaking of c-sections, it has been almost eight weeks and my incision has yet to fully heal. I don't even know what the problem is. When I had Delaney, I never even gave my incision a single thought. This time, it has been such a pain in my behind. I really don't know what the difference is -- maybe second surgery in a year, maybe staples instead of sutures, maybe different surgeon, maybe me doing too much after the surgery... Not sure, but the doctor doesn't like it and she thinks I should take an antibiotic in case it is infected. I filled the prescription, but I haven't taken any yet. I did a little research, and have found conflicting reports about whether it is safe to take while breastfeeding. Also, I am scared to death of getting thrush again, and I know taking antibiotics can really contribute to that by killing all the bacteria, good and bad. Then again, I know my incision doesn't look right. What to do, what to do....

one month old

My little dude turns one month old today. Almost seems impossible, but after having one, I know how quickly the time can fly. Soon he'll be sprouting teeth, running, and throwing temper tantrums just like his big sister. Yeah, can't wait for that last one. :) :) Someone around here has been exerting her will and testing limits quite.a.lot these days. I'm pretty sure she will be my, shall we say, parenting challenge. Let's hope Callum stays his mellow little self. Here are recent pix of my babies....

on this day in 2010...

My facebook status this time last year -- "Melissa is a little sad that Delaney is growing out of her newborn size clothing. Sniff sniff. :) :)"

My, how things have changed. I have another babe currently IN newborn size clothing, and not really looking to outgrow them anytime soon. Delaney, on the other hand, is a little bruiser and outgrowing things left and right. How different my world is than just one year ago.

And I like it. :) :)

2nd addition/edition....

Welcome to our new little man, born July 28 at 7:20 pm. He's a sweetie and has already stolen my heart.

my firstborn turns one!!!

Tomorrow, at precisely 8:30 a.m. EST, my daughter will be a year old. !!! And that blows my mind just a little. Ok, a LOT. It is hard for me to comprehend that I have been a mama to that sweet girl for a whole year. Wasn't it just yesterday I was swaddling her, nursing in the middle of the night, and wondering when she would stop crying?? I have to say, I have really enjoyed every stage so far. Teething was never an issue for her, so I can't say anything about that one. I love the newborn thing, the starting-to-develop-a-personality thing, the rolling over thing, the sitting up thing, the cooing thing, the smiling thing.....I like it all. And she really is the best little kid -- I feel incredibly blessed. She has recently started giving hugs and loving on Mama and Daddy, and if that doesn't melt my heart, well then.... :) :)

So, at one year old, what is Delaney up to??
  • We don't go for regular doctor visits, so I have no idea on height and weight -- I would guess about 20-21 pounds.
  • Wears a size 3 diaper.
  • Crawls half the time, walks the other half -- getting closer to being a full-time walker.
  • Is all about the paci, at least for sleeping purposes. Goes to bed with one paci in her mouth and another one in her hand. :) :)
  • Basically in size 12 month clothing -- some bottoms/dresses are 18 months because she is so tall.
  • Has two bottom teeth. She had a little accident about a month ago and knocked one a little crooked.
  • Sleeps generally 12 hours a night....8pm--8am. Lately, she has been sleeping later though, gets up somewhere between 9 and 9:30.
  • Most days has gone down to one nap. On exceptionally cranky days, might have two. :) :)
  • She loves milk!! Sadly, we stopped nursing around seven months due to infections/Mama being pregnant again. Does not particularly like juice or water, unless we feed it to her from a regular cup. Might skip the sippy cup stage.
  • Eats EVERYTHING!! I still puree some veggies to get nutrients in her.
  • Loves to clap for herself and everything.
  • No real words yet -- getting close to something like "dada" or "daddy" when she sees him. And says something that I think means "thank you."
  • She is a real social butterfly!! She LOVES attention, especially from men (hmmmmm.... ;)
  • Loves her little gear toy and her shape sorter.
  • Is pretty much the cutest kid ever and definitely my favorite little girl!!!
I'm sure there is lots more, but I just want to record a few things to make sure I remember. Happy birthday to my sweet sweet girl!! ♥ ♥

hello 117

Yep, that was our heat index today. And let me tell you, I felt every last degree of it. Tomorrow, it is supposed to "cool off" to 90 or so. Oddly enough, I am really looking forward to that. :) :)

Points of interest over the last few days....

  • Had to visit the doctor on Tuesday. Again, she was not pleased that I only gained 2 pounds in 4 weeks. Also, she continues to think I am measuring smaller than average/what is expected. If she would read my chart and listen to me, she might remember that the same.exact.thing happened when I was pregnant with Delaney and all was well. However, numbers schnumbers......so she makes me have another ultrasound to check on fluid levels and baby growth. Which I had today, and assume all was well, even though the tech was quite tight-lipped about telling me anything about my baby. Other than the fact that he is definitely a boy. Thanks lady. Although, strangely enough, the ultrasound may have well been the highlight of my day since I got to spend 2+ hours in air conditioning what with the drive and all. Hehe. :) :)
  • I no longer have ankles. Just saying. :P
  • Getting ready for Delaney's little party. Just need to pick up some drinks tomorrow, and the cake, of course. Maybe some balloons. She got a cute little birthday outfit from Gymboree last night (from sweet friends), perhaps some pics forthcoming.
  • My birthday happens to be the day after D's. Again, no big plans. Last year, I spent it in the hospital. This year, I am hoping for a little Taco Bell and cheesecake. And a little spending money. I'm pretty low maintenance. Well, probably just when I'm nine months pregnant, but still...... ;)
  • Ummmmm, nothing else too exciting, unless you want to hear about how I slept in the dining room on an air mattress last night. And how the fan has become my BFF. :) :)

heat wave

It. Is. HOT.

We have no A/C.

I am nine months pregnant.

The forecast has no end in sight for this loveliness.

I may die.

That is all. :) :)

a house full of sickies

Yep, that's what we are. Hence the reason for the unplanned hiatus. One of these days, we will all be well. At least that's what I tell myself. Ha!! :) :)

So here's the short list of happenings....

  • Sweet friends brought us an extra freezer. Been wanting one for a while, debating on cost. It will be great. I know church people plan to fill it with meals for when baby B is born. Also, it will be great to have the option of freezing homemade baby food as well as milk for baby B.
  • Babykins #1 has launched into the world of self-mobility. Well, mobility on two appendages as opposed to four. Yes, she has taken steps!! And continues to do so every day. Kinda funny, because I normally think she looks (and feels!! Ah my back!!) pretty big, but when she's walking by herself, she looks so tiny.
  • Playskool Push 'n' Stack Gears is a great toy. Just saying.
  • Babykins #1 turns the big numero uno next weekend. Planning a little shindig of sorts for friends and family. Nothing spectacular. I'm not sure I'll even be up to ANYTHING, but we can't let the occasion go unnoticed just because Mama is 9 months pregnant. :) :) So hopefully all the sickies will be gone by then. I haven't slept in going on a week and it's getting a little old. Yeah yeah, I know, prep for a new baby and all that. But I COULD use more than a couple hours in the meantime.

Canada Day (yawn)

July 4 comes three days early up here in Canada. Well, you know what I mean -- it's not July 4, but it is independence day for Canada. Which means everything is closed, people (not me) go camping, people (not me) drink a lot, and people (not me) set off lots of fireworks. Come to think of it, that seems to be what most people do on every holiday up here.

We generally do.....nothing. James does shift work, and has worked probably every Canada Day since we have been married. I sit at home and get annoyed with the loudness, especially this year since I have a sleeping baby that I would like to keep sleeping. We shall see how the night progresses. I suppose when the kids are older, we might go to a fireworks display or have a BBQ or something. But for now, it's low-key and I am sitting at home blogging. :) :)

I'm a little bit of a party pooper, but I'm good with this arrangement. What's patriotic about fireworks anyways?? :)

I guess this is what the $$ is for....

Every month, we pay X number of dollars to some company for the use of our water heater. It is a number of dollars that I think is excessive, but what do you do. We're not going to live in this house forever, so buying our own heater right now is not really a smart option. So we rent it from this company for an exorbitant amount of money.

Last night, James went to shave before going to work and there was no hot water. He thought maybe it was because I was rinsing dishes downstairs (in cold water apparently, who knew!). But nope, there was no hot water to be found anywhere in the house. No shaving. However DID they do it in the old days?? :) :)

James went to work. I thought about the possibility of no hot shower in the morning. Not very appealing, especially given the much cooler temps around here as of late. So I called the 24-hour hotline around 10pm. After shamelessly admitting to the lady on the phone that I basically know NOTHING about water heaters except there were some lights flashing on the temperature control panel and they probably weren't supposed to be. :) :) She arranged for a serviceman to come this morning between 8am and noon. Said serviceman showed up at 8:30am, water heater fixed by 9:30am, life is good again.

And I guess THAT is why we have to pay that X number of dollars. :) :)

rainy Friday (and every other day)

So the weather has been a bit wacky this year. But that's Canada for ya. The end of May was hot hot HOT, close to scorching at times, and I wondered how I would make it through another couple months of pregnancy. Not to worry, because June has rolled around with spring-like temps, even cool at times. We even had a few nights where the temperature dropped so low that a few of the plants in the garden died, never to be revived again. :(

Anyways, the last few days have been full of rain. All kinds -- showers, drizzle, pouring, thunderstorms. Yep, we got it all, and I'm pretty sure I managed to be out and about during every.single.thunderstorm.

Today was a bit of a nothing day. Yesterday, Delaney and I went grocery shopping in the middle of one of the storms -- always a fun task. :) :) I was blending up some baby food for her last night, and feeling a little saddened that she doesn't need very much of that anymore. She's happier when she can feed herself, and I'm pretty sure she is happiest while shoving her mouth full of food. Aren't we all?? :) :) She turned 11 months old yesterday, don't even know how that's possible. Mama is starting to try to think about what to do for the BIG birthday. Since I will be ten days from my next due date at that time, I'm thinking low-key, but I really don't want her birthday to get overlooked either. Decisions decisions....

And YES, you were paying attention -- that basically WAS a post all about *nothing*. :) :)

...and baby makes four...

So my old blog just didn't feel right anymore. It seemed more about our early married life, when I was working and had not a care in the world beyond the price of gas and sales at Michael's.

Ok, maybe not quite. But still. We have a family now -- a beautiful baby girl, and a baby boy due to join us in late July/early August. Our dynamics have changed -- for the better -- and I thought perhaps my blog should as well. I wasn't writing on the other one anyways. No promises on this one, either, but we shall see.

This will be our story -- the good, the bad, the funny, the serious, the dramatic, the boring, the beautiful, the ugly..... Family of FOUR. Has a nice ring to it. We are very much looking forward to our new addition coming in just 5-6 weeks. Granted, I was not *always* super excited about it, but I'll probably post about that in a later entry.

For now, I will leave you with a (somewhat) recent picture of our babykins #1, the star of the show -- for now. :) :)
